Soraya L Valles graduated in Biological Science at the University of Valencia in 1985 and in 1996 she finished her PhD in the IIC Institute looking for astrogliogenesis during brain development. In 1997 she spent three years at Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, UK. She was working in inflammation and regulation of IL-1 and IL-1 receptor. In 2000 she returned to Spain at Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine in University of Valencia until now. The Changs and their colleagues did ground breaking work by identifying the gene that encodes the cholesterol storage enzyme acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase 1 (ACAT1/SOAT1). For this work, Dr. T.Y. Chang received a MERIT award from NIH, USA. More recently, the Chang lab at Dartmouth demonstrated ACAT1 as a potential target for treating several human diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and Niemann-Pick type C disease.

Dr. Pant received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Agra University, Agra, India. His postdoctoral studies were conducted on the mechanisms of electron and ion transport in model membrane systems at the Department of Biophysics at Michigan State University. He joined the Laboratory of Neurobiology in the NIMH as a senior staff fellow in 1974 with Dr. Ichiji Tasaki where he studied the function of the axonal cytoskeleton in the squid giant axon. In 1979 he moved to the NIAAA extending his studies on the neuronal cytoskeleton and the effects of alcohol on its regulation. Dr. Pant moved to the NINDS, Laboratory of Neurochemistry in 1987 where he is presently chief of the section on Cytoskeleton Regulation. His laboratory is studying the mechanisms of topographic regulation of neuronal cytoskeleton proteins by post-translational modification, including the role of kinase cascades in normal brain and during neurodegeneration

The major focus of this laboratory has been to study the mechanisms of topographic regulation of neuronal cytoskeletal proteins regulation by phosphorylation and neurodegeneration. In a normal physiological state, cytoskeletal proteins are phosphorylated extensively in the axonal compartment of a mature neuron. Although all the substrates, kinases, phosphatases and their regulators are synthesized in neuronal cell bodies, little or no cytoskeletal protein phosphorylation has been detected in the cell body compartment. Under a variety of neuropathological conditions, however, such as ALS, Alzheimers Disease, or Picks disease, hyperphosphorylation of these molecules has been found in abnormal aggregates within cell bodies, usually correlated with massive neuronal cell death. The mechanisms underlying these profound compartmental shifts in neuronal phosphorylation are not well understood.The normal physiological processes within neurons are controlled by signal transduction mechanisms that regulate the balance between protein kinase and protein phosphatase activities. We have shown that the most abundant and extensively phosphorylated motifs in the c-terminal domains (lys-ser-pro-, or KSP) are primarily phosphorylated by proline directed kinases, cdk5 and MAP kinases. Moreover, we have demonstrated that this phosphorylation is due to activation of the signal transduction cascade. Recently, we have focussed on the other part of this regulation, the protein phosphatases. The other project is to study the expression, regulation and role of neuronal Cdk5 in nerve cell function.Cdk5 is a unique multifunctional kinase. Unlike other cyclin-dependent kinases, it is expressed predominantly in post-mitotic neurons, its activity modulated by association with nervous system-specific propeins. Since its identification and characterization in our laboratory, we have been intensively studying its mechanisms of regulation and its role in nerve cell function.

Giuseppe Scalabrino studied at the School of Medicine of the University of Milan and received his M.D. degree magna cum laude in 1968. He has held a number of academic positions in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Milan. He was Associate Professor of General Pathology between 1971 and 1985; full Professor of General Pathology from 1986 till 2014. He has been invited speaker in various conferences, mainly dealing with the role of polyamines in oncology and subsequently with the cobalamin (vitamin B12) neurotrophism. Among his numerous honors, he received the International Award "Roentgen" from Italian Accademia dei Lincei in Rome for oncological research in 1983. He is author of more than 100 scientific papers and reviewer of numerous International Journals. Dr. George Perry is currently the dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. After graduation in Zoology from University of California, Santa Barbara, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and also studied at Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University and the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Hole and obtained his PhD in Marine Biology in 1979. Dr. Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in 1995, where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Microscopy Society of America, Royal Society of Medicine, Royal Society of Chemistry, Society of Biology and the Linnean Society and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists. Professor WK Tang was appointed to professor in the Department of Psychiatry, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011. Professor Tang completed his medical training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an academic staff since 1999. His main research area is Neuropsychiatry in Stroke. Professor Tang has published over 100 papers in renowned journals, and has also contributed to the peer review of 40 journals. Vahe Poghosyan received his MSc in Mathematics (1997) from Yerevan State University and PhD in Neurophysiology (2000) from National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Dr. George Perry is currently the dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. After graduation in Zoology from University of California, Santa Barbara, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and also studied at Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University and the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Hole and obtained his PhD in Marine Biology in 1979. Dr. Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in 1995, where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. Dr. Perry is on Board of the National Organization of Portuguese Americans and serves as Director of Education and Research.

Guy H Fontaine has made 15 original contributions at the inception of pacemakers since early 60s. He has serendipitously identified Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia in the late 70s. He has published more than 900 scientific papers including 201 book chapters. He was the reviewer of 17 journals in Clinical and Basic Science. Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti, The Saunders Family Chair and Professor of Neurology, received an M.D. from the Milan University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. from the University of Milan. He is currently the Director of the NIH funded Mount Sinai Center on the Promotion of Cognitive and Psychological Resilience and the Chief of the Brain Institute Center of Excellence for Novel Approaches to Neurodiagnostics and Neurotherapeutics. Patricio F. Reyes, MD is a board certified Neurologist and Neuropathologist, and director Barrow Neurological Institute’s Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Cognitive Disorders Program, and Neuropathology Research Laboratory. Before joining BNI he was professor of Neurology, Pathology and Psychiatry and director of Creighton University’s Center for Aging, Alzheimer’s disease and Neurodegenerative Disorders, and Brain Bank and held similar positions at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He is the American Academy of Neurology advocate for Minority Americans with AD and other dementias. His interests include characterizing the clinical manifestations of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and investigating the structural, anatomical and neurochemical substrates of neurobehavioral symptoms. He is involved in clinical trials for AD and has established clinical programs for Hispanic patients and minority caregivers. These programs are important in identifying ethnic related risk factors for AD, understanding the vulnerability of brain regions affected in AD, and verifying the safety, tolerability and efficacy of pharmacologic agents in various races. Pant received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Agra University, Agra, India. His postdoctoral studies were conducted on the mechanisms of electron and ion transport in model membrane systems at the Department of Biophysics at Michigan State University. Dr. Bielekova received an M.D. degree in 1993 from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. After a medical internship at SUNY Downstate, Medical Center in Brooklyn and a neurology residency at the Boston University, she did 3 year postdoctoral research fellowship at the NIH/NINDS/Neuroimmunology Branch (NIB). She remained at NIB for additional 5 years as staff physician, focusing on development of novel therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS). In 2005 she became associate professor of neurology and director of the Waddell Center for MS at University of Cincinnati. In 2008 she moved back to NINDS as an investigator. Her laboratory is studying mechanisms of immunoregulation in humans and mechanisms of tissue injury in neuroimmunological diseases, such as MS. In addition, Dr. Bielekova is in charge of the clinical service of the Neuroimmunology Branch and is principal investigator on several innovative Phase I/II clinical trials and natural history protocols.

Neuroimmunological Diseases Unit (NDU) has two major areas of interest: First, we study mechanisms of immunoregulation in humans with special emphasis on immunoregulatory natural killer (NK) cells and IL-2/IL-2R system. We are investigating mechanisms that maintain immune tolerance (i.e. mechanisms that assure that immune system does not attack normal tissue) in healthy human subjects and in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) a putative autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS). Second, we are interested to define targets of the immune response in neuroimmunological diseases, mechanisms that participate in CNS tissue destruction and to define in-vivo biomarkers that reflect prevailing mechanisms of CNS tissue injury in neuroimmunological diseases. Our laboratory focuses on human subjects and extensive functional in-vitro studies are complemented with in-vivo observations derived from Phase I/II clinical trials that target pathways/molecules of interest defined in the laboratory. This allows us to correlate therapy-induced changes on the immune system functions to neuroimaging and functional measures of neurological disability, providing in-vivo relevance for the observed biological alterations. Our long-term goal is to develop novel, potentially curative immunomodulatory therapies for MS and to develop neuroprotective strategies for neuroimmunological diseases. Furthermore, we strive to define and validate biomarkers indicative and predictive of therapeutic response to different treatment modalities.

Jeffrey David Lewine, PhD is a Professor of Translational Neuroscience, and the Director of Business Development at the MIND Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also the Director of Neuroscience for Lovelace Scientific Resources; an adjunct associate professor in the departments of Psychology and Neurology at the University of New Mexico; the Director of Clinical Research for Cognionics Inc.; and the CEO of the Center for Advanced Diagnostics, Evaluation, and Therapeutics. Dr. Lewine received his doctorate in neuroscience in 1989 from the University of Rochester. Following completion of his graduate training, he was named a Director's Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory where he worked on the development of advanced brain imaging technologies. The major focus of this laboratory has been to study the mechanisms of topographic regulation of neuronal cytoskeletal proteins regulation by phosphorylation and neurodegeneration.

Dr Girouard completed her PhD in cardiovascular physiology in 2002 at the Université de Montreal under the supervision of Dr J. de Champlain, a specialist in the field of hypertension. She then pursued with two fellowships both on the study of cerebrovascular regulation: one at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and a second one at the University of Vermont under the supervisions of Dr. Costantino Iadecola and Dr Mark T. Nelson, respectively. She is now associate professor at the Department of pharmacology and physiology at the Université de Montréal and the director of the laboratory of neurovascular pharmacology since 2008. Along her career, Dr Girouard received prices including the Merck New investigator price of the ‘Société Québécoise d’Hypertension Artérielle’ and the Young Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. She recently was nominated Fellow of the American Heart Association. She is involved in many Societies related to Hypertension and neurosciences in particular the ‘Société Québécoise d’Hypertension Artérielle’ and the ‘International Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism’ in which she is member of the Board of Directors.

The research interests of Dr Girouard are the study of the mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular regulation in health and diseases especialy in the context of hypertension and arterial stiffness. The main objective of her research is to find therapeutical targets to protect the brain from vascular diseases. To reach this objective, she is using various techniques from molecular biology to brain imaging in mice and humans. She published mostly in the field of hypertension and cerebrovascular regulation.

Panteleimon Giannakopoulos has completed his MD at age of 23 years from the University of Athens and is board certified psychiatrist and psychotherapist from 1999. He completed his postgraduate training in London and Paris before taking the chair of old age psychiatry in Geneva. He has also a full training in cognitive neurosciences focusing on dementing conditions. He was the chairman of the Department of Psychiatry in Geneva from 2005 to 2015 before being appointed as medical director of the Forensic Psychiatry for the Geneva county. He has published more than 220 peer-reviewed articles (h index: 42), and has been serving as an editorial board member and reviwer of repute.

Sharma in 1960 entered the University of Connecticut for graduate work in Medicinal Chemistry and received his Ph.D. in 1963. Subsequently, after several Post-doctoral positions, including at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, he joined the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Memphis in 1970 where he rose to the rank of Full Tenured Professor of Biochemistry and Physiology. During this period through NIH Special Fellowship he spent two-years Sabbatical as a Visiting Professor at the McArdle Laboratory University of Wisconsin, Madison, in Dr. Henry Pitot’s lab, and subsequently additional two-years Sabbatical at the NIH, Bethesda in Dr. Michael Cashel’s lab. After Full Professorship at the Case Western University and Founder and Head of the Unit of Regulatory Biology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland Ohio, he joined the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey as the Professor and Head of The Unit of Regulatory and Molecular Biology. Since July 2006 he is at the Salus University as a Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In a period spanning four decades, his research team has dedicated itself to the advancement of the field of membrane guanylate cyclase in the vertebrate systems. A few of its core findings that have impacted this and the field of cellular signal transduction follow. (1) With the discovery of the first membrane guanylate cyclase, ANF-RGC that was also the hormone receptor of ANF, the membrane guanylate cyclase surface receptor family was established. (2) It had a unique signal transduction mechanism. Instead of GTP in G-Protein signaling, it was regulated by ATP through its ARM module (ARM). The complete dissection of the module, followed through the concept-based analysis, localized a WTAPELL motif that controlled the entire signal transduction process, it was, then, predicted that this motif is the one that controls the ANF-RGC-dependent blood pressure in vasculature. This has now been proven true through the construction of the mouse genetic model. The mice lacking this motif are hypertensive. (3) The discovery and molecular characterization of the photoreceptor ROS-GC is a land mark event in the phototransduction field. It filled in the gap on the identity of the source of cyclic GMP that serves as a second messenger of the LIGHT signal; and made it possible to explain the principles of phototransduction in molecular and physiological terms. It also impacted the core membrane guanylate cyclase field by branching it into two: a transducer of both the hormone receptor and the intracellularly-generated Ca2+ signals. (4) ROS-GC field took additional direction when it was demonstrated that, besides phototransduction, it is biochemically linked with the transduction mechanisms of the inner segments of the retina, olfactory cilia and the olfactory bulb neurons. (5) The demonstration that ROS-GC is a Ca2+-bimodal switch, generated a new revolutionary concept where theoretically ROS-GC could be modulated through two different modes of Ca2+ signaling: via Ca2+-sensor GCAPS and S100B, the latter stimulating it and the mode found exclusively in cones and absent in rods. (6) Recently, an additional model of the photoreceptor ROS-GC1 has been disclosed. ROS-GC1 is responsive to the bicarbonate signal; it is not the pH effect, rather it binds to a specific motif of the ROS-GC and transduces the signal in generation of cyclic GMP. Preliminary findings suggest that this novel transduction system is present in a small number of mouse cones, and, importantly, is absent in the rods. This opens up a new area of sensory transduction mechanism, where it is meant to communicate with the external atmospheric carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is sensed through carbonic anhydrase, whose subtype has been detected in some cones, it converts CO2 to the bicarbonate, which, then, becomes the second messenger of CO2 and a signaling agent of ROS-GC1. Threaded through this past history and step-by-step gain in the field, This investigator feels fortunate that his group has made these important contributions in generating the field of membrane guanylate cyclase, establishing that cyclic GMP is an ubiquitous intracellular second messenger in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and that it plays a critical role in the control of physiological processes of cardiac vasculature, smooth muscle relaxation, blood volume, cellular growth, sensory transduction, neural plasticity, learning and memory. It is also gratifying to know that during this course he has been able to train and guide more than 35 doctoral and post-doctoral students, author 184 peer-reviewed research articles, including the editorship of three books, Special Editorship of two journals of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and the e-book editor of the Frontiers Molecular Neuroscience Research Topic, all focused on the field of membrane guanylate cyclases. Mootaz Salman is a pharmacist and researcher PhD student at the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC) at Sheffield Hallam University, working with Prof. Nicola Woodroofe and Dr. Matthew Conner’s research group and a member of the multi-institute Aquaporin research collaboration. His research interest focus on the identification of new drug targets for brain oedema and epilepsy through his work on the special water channels called “Aquaporins”. Mootaz graduated with Outstanding Distinction in his MSc winning the Sheffield Hallam University prize for the most scientific contribution and ranked 1st in year. His PhD research requires the skilled use of numerous techniques ranging from standard biochemical and molecular biology to cutting edge micro-array and laser confocal microscopy. Mootaz is an international ambassador at Sheffield Hallam University, ambassador for British Society of Experimental Biology (SEB); and STEM ambassador since 2014. He has given four invited oral presentations and talks at major international conferences in Canada, Netherlands, Romania and Japan along with three talks at a national level. He is also an active member in a number of scientific societies nationally and internationally including USA, Canada and Japan. He has been selected to be an abstract reviewer at two major international conferences; Brain 2015 in Canada and also for the upcoming Brain 2017 in Berlin, along with being an abstract reviewer and a member of poster judgement panel during the North of England Postgraduate Conference (NEPG) which is the UK's largest annual postgraduate conference for medical biosciences. Mootaz has successfully participated in organising a number of national and international high profile conferences and also he has been selected to chair scientific sessions at two national events.
